“To Infinity and Beyond”
Abstract: This talk should be accessible to all people, even administrators and department chairs, and requires no background in mathematics. It will focus on the work of my favorite mathematician Georg Cantor who laid the groundwork for the modern mathematical understanding of infinity. During the talk we will ask and answer some fundamental questions about infinite sets: How do you compare the sizes of two infinite sets? What does "larger" mean when it refers to infinite sets? Are some infinite sets larger than others? --- The whole thing is lots of fun.
